An Irish ganster pot of gold with leprechaun gold and rainbow smiling with a gold tooth with a purple sign that says 'Don't forget to wear green'

Introduction: The origin story

Some say if your ever in Ireland during St. Patrick's day and see a rainbow and follow it to the end; you will see this wee Pot O' Horror to greet you. with a head filled with Irish Gold and a smile of his golden Irish coin tooth, he will give a friendly (ironically Purple) reminder on his misshapen handle to wear green on this special day.

About this piece

Yeah....well I know this is ugly and pretty hard to look at, but this monstrosity was one of my earliest St Patrick's day inspired works. We have all heard the classic Irish folklore: if you find yourself in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day and follow a rainbow to its very end, you’ll find a pot of gold guarded by a leprechaun. However, in my artistic universe circa 2005–2007, the legend took a much darker, weirder turn. Instead of a mythical treasure, you might just be greeted by what I’ve dubbed the "Pot 'O Freaky Gold." This piece is a fascinating relic from my early portfolio. It was originally intended to be a lighthearted, humorous take on a holiday staple, but as many artists know, sometimes a drawing takes on a life of its own. What started as a "funny" character ended up crossing the line into something much creepier—a "monstrosity" that has become a legend within my own family archives.

The Design: From "happy" to "gangster"

The creative intent behind this drawing was actually quite specific. I wanted to create a "funny" version of a pot of gold, personifying the cauldron itself. I gave him a head filled with Irish gold and a "tough guy" or "gangster" persona, complete with a single, glinting golden coin for a tooth. However, the execution resulted in a " Pot O' Freaky Gold." With a wide, toothy grin woth a golden tooth grill and a misshapen handle, he offers a friendly (yet ironically purple…what I’m the world was I thinking back then) reminder to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. There is something undeniably "creepy" about inanimate objects with human faces (I mean come on that’s just uncanny), a trope often explored in surrealist art. Especially something so out of place a While I call it "ugly" and "ganster," pot of gold it’s that very awkwardness that gives the piece its lasting hilarious appeal. It’s a perfect example of how art doesn't always have to be "pretty" to be memorable.

Technical Breakdown: Crayons and #2 Pencils

Like many of my works from this era, this was created using the basic neccecroes of a child: white printing paper, standard #2 pencils, and a box of crayons. 1.The Pencil Work: The "misshapen" nature of the pot came from freehand sketching without a reference. Using a #2 pencil allowed for those dark, heavy outlines that contribute to the "gritty" feel of the character. 2.The Crayon Texture: Crayons are often associated with childhood innocence, which creates a hilarious contrast when used to draw a "creepy" pot of gold with a gold grill. The waxy texture of the crayons helped fill in the gold coins, giving them a heavy, tactile look. 3.The Purple "Reminder": The choice of purple for the handle was a deliberate break from the traditional green and gold color scheme. In art theory, purple and yellow (gold) are complementary colors, meaning they sit opposite each other on the color wheel. This contrast makes the "freaky" elements of the pot stand out even more.

The Importance of Humorous Art in Families

One of the reasons I cherish this "monstrosity" is the story behind it. This wasn't made for a gallery or a grade; it was made as a humorous joke for my family. Art has a unique power to create "inside jokes." Every year around St. Patrick's Day, this drawing resurfaces as a reminder of those early creative experiments. It reminds us that art is a form of communication. Even though it turned out "much creepier than I wanted," it succeeded in its primary goal: it made people laugh. we often focus on "perfect" art, but there is immense value in sharing the "badly drawn" works that carry genuine human connection and laughter.

Final Thoughts

Enjoy this "Pot 'O Freaky Gold" for what it is: a weird, funny, and slightly unsettling piece of holiday inspired art. It stands as a testament to the fact that creativity is a journey. You have to draw the "creepy" pots of gold to eventually get to the masterpieces. Whether you find this legendary freak funny or a bit haunting, he’s a permanent resident of my "Old" gallery, reminding me to always keep a sense of humor in my work.
